Week 6 NFL

Before we look at today's NFL matchups, we had some noteworthy stuff happen on the campuses yesterday. Oh yes, we did.

- Texas shut down #1 Oklahoma's running game, and withstood 5 TD passes from Sam Bradford to knock the Sooners out of the top spot in the polls. The Longhorns' Chris Ogbonnaya went Ag-booya!, rushing for 127 yards as Texas won 45-35 in front of 92,000 plus at the Cotton Bowl.

- With Oklahoma's loss early in the day, a handful of teams had a chance to impress the computers and move into the top spot.

- #2 Alabama wasn't one of them. They had the weekend off.

- #3 Missouri laid an egg at home against Oklahoma State. Chase Daniel threw 3 second half INT's and the Tigers went down 28-23.

- #4 LSU probably has seen the last of being anywhere near the top spot thanks to the 51-21 thrashing they took in Gainesville last night.

#6 Penn State will have at the very least a spot in the top 3 after exterminating the Badgers in Madison 48-7. The margin of victory was huge when you consider that the Lions only had 64 more yards of total offense than Wisconsin had.

So, an exciting day in college football, and we can thank the BCS system for that. If we had the playoff everyone rubs their nipples to so much, all of those games would have been as meaningless as a Georgetown/Syracuse game in January.

(3-2) BEARS AT (3-2) FALCONS
The Setup
I spent most of last night watching "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" with the wife. About half way thru I went into spastic colon syndrome and spent the next hour on the toilet. Coincidence? I don't think so. This afternoon in Atlanta, we have a couple of teams who have surprised everyone by having decent starts to their season. The Bears are winning with a balanced and effective offense and a tough defense, while the Falcons are battering teams on the ground with the NFL's leading rusher, Michael Turner.
Confidence Pool Pick- Bears 3

The Result
This was a game you'll never forget if you are a Bears fan or a Falcons fan. If you're a Bears fan, you're wondering how the hell you manage to lose a game after scoring a touchdown to take the lead with 11 second left. I mean, really, how do you do that without trying to do that?
I guess the way you do that is to idiotically elect to do a squib kick on the kickoff, setting the other team up on their 40 yard line with 6 seconds left.

Then you allow a guy to get open 30 yards downfield on the next play, standing right next to the sideline, which was about the only way that the Falcons could get in field goal position to stop the clock and kick the game winning field goal. No, screw that, it WAS the only way. I mean, how do you let that happen? Most NFL teams could have pulled 7 guys off the field and played 11 on 4 and still not let that happen. My God.

Final- Falcons 22, Bears 20
Fantasy Heroes: Matt Forte RB CHI 16 pts; Roddy White WR ATL 19 pts; Jason Elam K ATL 15 pts; Matt Ryan QB ATL 20 pts

(2-2) DOLPHINS AT (0-4) TEXANS
The Setup
Matt Schaub returns at QB for the Tejanos after Sage Rosenfels' treated us all to a meltdown that would embarrass the Cubs at the end of last week's loss to the Colts. The Dolphins, no doubt, have all kinds of Wildcat Wackiness in store for us, although they would probably do just fine using their regular offense against Houston's underachieving defense.
Confidence Pool Pick- Dolphins 2

The Result
Sometimes, it's just not gonna be your day. The Texans were trailing this game by 6 with a little over a minute left, had the ball, and almost turned it over on pretty much every single play, because that's what the Texans do.

On this day though, the Football Gods were smiling upon them, because an almost sack and fumble was ruined an incomplete pass, and an interception was ruled a trap after a Booty Review.

Then, on 4th and 10, Matt Schaub heaved one downfield that by all rights should have been picked off, but Andre Johnson reached over the helmet of the Miami defender and pulled it in for a first down. The Texans then got down to the Miami 4, Schaub almost threw 2 more interceptions, and on 4th down he finally ran it in to end this ridiculousness. Thus did the Dolphins lose a game in which they had a fullback get 138 receiving yards, and the Texans get their greatest win out of the 7 in franchise history.

Final- Texans 30, Dolphins 28
Fantasy Heroes: Patrick Cobbs RB MIA 27 pts; Andre Johnson WR HOU 24 pts; Ronnie Brown RB MIA 15 pts; Chad Pennington QB MIA 22 pts; Matt Schaub QB HOU 21 pts

(2-2) RAVENS AT (2-2) COLTS
The Setup
If the Colts had any other quarterback other than Peyton Manning, they'd be 0-4 right now. They look old, tired, and done. The Ravens defense may be old too, but they look anything but tired, and certainly not done. Manning has spent a lot of time running for his life this year behind the Colts' leaky offensive line, and you'll probably see a lot of that today as well.
Confidence Pool Pick- Ravens 1

The Result
Hey, welcome to the 2008 NFL season, Indianapolis Colts. The Ravens defense still ranks 1st in the league after this game, but I think now it's pretty clear the emperor is not wearing any pants. Indy gives Baltimore it's third loss in a row, and somewhere in hell, Bob Irsay is high fiving Bing Crosby.

Final- Colts 31, Ravens 3
Fantasy Heroes: Peyton Manning QB 28 pts; Colts DST 18 pts; Reggie Wayne WR IND 19 pts; Marvin Harrison WR IND 2o pts; Dominic Rhodes RB IND 13 pts

(0-4) LIONS AT (2-3) VIKINGS
The Setup
The Vikings somehow got a win on Monday Night last week despite having 2 punts run back for TDs on them. Actually, I shouldn't say somehow, they won by finally having one more dimension to their offense than they usually had. Bernard Berrian woke up and was the downfield threat the Vikings need him to be to give their offense some balance. Of course, none of these things are important against a Lions team that has given up. They could have Berrian and Gus Frerrotte switch places, and have Adrian Peterson snapping the ball to Berrian and Frerrotte running post patterns all day and still probably win this game by 3 touchdowns.
Confidence Pool Pick- Vikings 12

The Result
There was nothing notable about this game except how bad both of these teams played. Oh, and Dan Orlovsky dropping back to pass, and rolling out, 5 yards out of his own end zone, apparently trying to use the row of photographers as blockers since his own offensive line obviously can't block for him, happily oblivious to the fact that he has given the Vikings the 2 points that turn out to decide the game. Seriously, go watch this play on NFL .com.
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter?game_id=29606&season=2008 displayPage=tab_gamecenter
Funniest. Play. Ever.
It was like, "What? I can't do that?"
Roy Williams has 2 catches for 23 yards in his last game as a Lion. He is SO worth a first, third, and sixth round pick. This is like the reverse of the Herschel Walker trade for the Cowboys.

Final- Vikings 12, Lions 10
Fantasy Heroes- Calvin Johnson WR DET 14 pts; Bernard Berrian WR MIN 21 pts; Lions DST 13 pts

(1-3) RAIDERS AT (2-3) SAINTS
The Setup
For a league that is so militaristic and highly drilled, there sure are a lot of train wrecks to gape at right now, and the Raiders are one of them. Their play on the field hasn't been that bad, and that makes them dangerous, but Al Davis personal crusade against Lane Kiffin's Propaganda Machine has created a circus that is the last thing a young and seemingly improving team needs. It ain't all seashells and balloons for the Saints either. They are off to a disappointing start for the second consecutive year, and in an NFC South that has 3 pretty good teams, a 2-4 start could prove too much to overcome if they can't hold off the Raiders today.
Confidence Pool Pick - Saints 11

The Result
The Raiders apparently spent their bye week getting acclimated to new head coach Tom Cable, and working hard to become even worse at football than they already were. NFL Network reported yesterday that Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh said he'd be willing to work for Al Davis as the Raiders' head coach, saying something to the effect of, "I have no problem answering to the whims of batshit crazy paranoid 130 year old vampires in tracksuits." or some such.

Final- Saints 31, Raiders 3
Fantasy Heroes: Drew Brees QB NO 32 pts; Reggie Bush RB NO 18 pts

(0-5) BENGALS AT (2-2) JETS
The Setup
What was I saying about train wrecks? I give you the Bengals. Choooo chooooo! Ryan FitzHarvard starts for them today, so that's a loss. We can all have fun watching Brett Favre run around the field with his child like joy though, jumping around like a Cub fan in June celebrating TD passes against an 0-5 team. What's that old saw about how you should act when scoring a touchdown, act like you've been there before? Yeah.
Confidence Pool Pick- Jets 10

The Result
You should have heard the conversation transpiring between my brother and I between 11 AM and noon regarding TJ Housmandzadeh, and whether or not he should start for our fantasy team given the news that Fitzpatrick would be the Bengals' QB in this game.

The big debate was over whether we should start Wes Welker, playing against the league's worst pass defense in San Diego, or Housh, who has actually had a couple of 20 fantasy points despite being on this abomination of a Bengals team. I was championing Welker, while brother was for TJ. We eventually came to a compromise where we started BOTH of them, and benched...Roddy White..who had a another huge game, while Welker and Housh, each one saddled with one of the worst quarterbacks I've ever seen at a professional level, both screwed the pooch . Democracy does not work in government, or in fantasy football.

Final- Jets 26, Bengals 14
Fantasy Heroes: Thomas Jones RB NYJ 25 pts; CIN DST 12 pts

(4-1) PANTHERS AT (3-2) BUCS
The Setup
Jeff Garcia gets the start today for the Somalian Pirates after Brian Griese took a shot to the elbow in his personal Mile High house of horrors last week. He faces a defense that made Jon Gruden so scared he had to stop the film and go for a walk while preparing this week. Scarrrry. The Panthers are one of the best teams in the league at this point in time. This will be a tough test for them, but it's a test I think they will pass.
Confidence Pool Pick- Panthers 8

The Result
Apparently the Panthers defense followed Gruden's lead and went for a walk during this game, and their offense. Somebody get the Panthers some quarters, they shit the bed and need to wash their sheets. The Bucs looked like last year's Bucs, with Jeff Garcia back at QB, which means he'll probably be randomly benched for no reason next week. Warrick Dunn can apparently still play a little too, as he topped 100 yards rushing.

Final- Bucs 27, Panthers 3
Fantasy Heroes: TB DST 16 pts; Warrick Dunn RB TB 14 pts; Steve Smith WR CAR 13 pts

(0-4) RAMS AT (4-1) REDSKINS
The Setup
As bad as the Lions and Bengals are, the Rams are much, much, much worse. Think about THAT.
Confidence Pool Pick- Redskins 14

The Result
Now think about THIS. The Redskins, who had won 4 in a row, including wins over such luminaries as the Cowboys and Eagles, go out and lose at home to this Rams team. Oh, the Rams tried to lose this game, they really did. O-lineman Richie Incognito told an official that he had a stinky vagina or something like that while the Rams were trying to kill the clock for what would have been a decisive 34 yard field goal attempt. So that turned into a 49 yard field goal attempt. Josh Brown nailed it anyway, and the Rams won.

Play of the game came at the end of the first half, with the Skins driving for what probably would have been at least a field goal, Jason Campbell had a pass batted in the air. Redskins lineman Pete Kendall caught it, and tried to run with it. He ran with all his might, for 2 yards, then he fumbled, and the Rams ran it in for a go ahead TD.
After that the Redskins looked traumatized, which can result in things like losing to the Rams. Jim Haslett, 1-0.

Final- Rams 19, Redskins 17
Fantasy Heroes- STL DST 16 pts, Clinton Portis RB WSH 27 pts; Josh Brown K STL 15 pts

LATE GAMES

(2-3) JAGUARS AT (4-1) BRONCOS
The Setup
The Jaguars offense makes me absolutely sick. Spastic colon sick. I fully expect them to go with their usual game plan of 40 passes and 15 runs even though they are facing the absolute worst run defense in the league. They fall behind by a touchdown, then it's panic button time and throw every down. Yes, I have MJD and Fred Taylor on one of my fantasy teams, and am very very angry. Meanwhile, Marshall Faulk just said that the Broncos are ready to die for Jay Cutler. I don't know how the Jags can compete with that.
Confidence Pool Pick- Broncos 9

The Result
Hey, Maurice Jones-Drew, thanks for making it to the 2008 season. The Jags gave MJD 22 carries, and lo and behold, he not only didn't melt or turn to a pillar of salt, but he ran for 125 yards and 2 TD. They may want to, I dunno, look into the possibility of giving him the ball more than 5 times a game?

The Jags were aided by 3 Denver turnovers, and a PI penalty late in the game that the Broncos found kind of questionable, but, guess what, after that Ed Hochuli/Chargers game, the Broncos have lost the right to bitch about the referees for the duration of the season. Broncos corner Dre Bly goes down in my book of football idiots by saying after the game,
"I guess they’ve been evaluating us and say we won games we shouldn’t have won. So, I guess they’re going to get a call against us." Of course, the referees are now conspiring to blow calls against you since you had one blown for you earlier in the year. It all makes sense now. God is a giant spaghetti monster.

Final- Jaguars 24, Broncos 17
Fantasy Heroes: Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAX 28 pts, Marcedes Lewis TE JAX 12 pts; Michael Pittman RB DEN 13 pts

(4-1) COWBOYS AT (3-2) CARDINALS
The Setup
Here it is, the Cardinals chance to get a seat at the big boy table for real. They looked awful good in last week's win over the Bills, and just awful in the loss to the Jets the week before. The Cardinals have one dimension, and can't run the ball. That won't get it done against the Cowboys.
Confidence Pool Pick- Cowboys 7

The Result
Anything interesting going on with the Cowboys? I mean, besides their quarterback getting hurt, Pacman Jones getting the heave ho, or them losing again, on a blocked punt in OT no less, and going into panic mode and trading for Roy Williams?

This trade, it makes no sense. I don't see how you make this team better by adding another WR with an over-abundance of estrogen when you already have one who seems like he's about to go home and start doing situps on his driveway already because he's not getting the ball enough.
What exactly is the thought process when you find yourself thinking, "You know what this team really needs to get over the hump, to win a championship, to achieve greatness? We need somebody who is playing for the LIONS. That's what we need. And dammit I'm going to trade three draft picks to get it." I'm typically a pretty pro-Cowboys dude, but this moronic deal is the beginning of the end for them.

Final- Cardinals 30, Cowboys 24 OT
Fantasy Heroes: Tony Romo QB DAL 31 pts; Marion Barber RB DAL 24 pts; Patrick Crayton WR DAL 14 pts; Steve Breaston WR AZ 18 pts; Larry Fitzgerald WR AZ 13 pts; AZ DST 17 pts

(2-3) EAGLES AT (2-3) NINERS
The Setup
These would be the Brian Westbrook-less Eagles, who are considerably less dangerous than the other version. Philly is Phinito if they lose this game, as there will most likely be two 5-1 teams in their division ahead of them for a wild card spot, and an undefeated team ahead of those teams. This was the team that a lot of people were picking to go to the Super Bowl. Not me though. I hate the Eagles.
Confidence Pool Pick- Niners 4

The Result
Let's sample some of the post-game rhapsodizing after the Eagles came back from a nine point deficit late in the third quarter to beat the mighty 49ers.

Andy Reid says about Donovan McNabb, "“He stayed upbeat. That’s when leaders lead.”

McNabb kisses him back, saying, "Anything I receive individually is a tribute not only to this team, (but) to the big guy that drafted me in ‘99."

Nicky says, "Get me two buckets. I need to diarrhea and vomit simultaneously."

Final- Eagles 40, Niners 26
Fantasy Heroes: Donovan McNabb 22 pts; Correll Buckhalter RB PHI 27 pts; Frank Gore RB SF 19 pts

(2-3) PACKERS AT (1-3) SEAHAWKS
The Setup
Like the Eagles, the Seahawks are another team fighting to avoid irreversible irrelvance this week. They'll have to do it with Charlie Frye at QB, who is there third string quarterback. It's a phrase that has been kind of played out, but I think is very applicable here: Good luck with that.
Confidence Pool Pick- Seahawks 6, but that was before I knew Hasselbeck wasn't playing, now I have no idea
The Result
We've finally found a team that Green Bay can beat in the wake of their QB's shoulder falling off, and their secondary getting real old and bad real fast. That team is a team that has Charlie Frye playing quarterback, and Koren Robinson as their best receiver.
Remember, this is the guy that was so awful in his last start, that not only did he get benched, he got traded a couple of days later. He threw for 83 yards in this game, so maybe it's time to pack those bags again.

Ryan Grant carried 33 times for 90 yards, an average of 2.7 yards per carry. The human body is 2 yards long, with the arms on average maybe another yard. So if you can get to the line of scrimmage and fall down every play, you can average 3 yards per carry. He averaged 2.7, so he obviously needs to work on his falling down.

Final- Packers 27, Seahawks 17
Fantasy Heroes: Aaron Rodgers QB GB 27 pts; Greg Jennings WR GB 14 pts

SUNDAY NIGHT
(3-1) PATRIOTS AT (2-3) CHARGERS
The Setup
I don't know how they expect us to watch this prime time game when both of these teams just got ass-raped by a Dolphins team that had lost 20 out of the 21 games they played before that. Needless to say, these teams ain't what they used to be. The Patriots are still 3-1 though, thanks to a weak schedule. The Chargers always take a little while to get it rolling, and I think they get it rolling tonight.
Confidence Pool Pick- Chargers 5

The Result
Congratulations Matt Cassel. You are officially the worst quarterback I have ever seen. The second worst is Matt Leinart. So I guess it makes sense that you were his backup in college.

Final- Chargers 30, Patriots 10
Fantasy Heroes:
Philip Rivers QB SD 32 pts; Vincent Jackson WR SD 21 pts; Malcolm Floyd WR SD 13 pts

MONDAY NIGHT
(5-0) GIANTS AT (1-3) BROWNS

The Setup
The indestructible, undefeated, Super Bowl Champion Giants juggernaut rumbles into Cleveland to take on a bumbling Browns team that they pummeled in the preseason, and is missing Kellen Winslow, who is probably their best player. It's quite obvious here that nothing can possibli go wrong. Possibly go wrong.

The Result
So, of course, this being the NFL, the Giants go out and lose 35-14, and the game probably wasn't even that close. The Cleveland fans were chanting "Over-rated" at the Giants at the end of the game, which I guess when you think about it means, "You are losing to our shitty team? You must not be that good."

Maybe the Browns aren't that shitty though. They have won 2 in a row, and they were supposed to be pretty good this year, and 2 of their 3 losses have been against Dallas and Pittburgh, who are pretty good. They go to Washington and Jacksonville in the next 2 weeks though, so they still probably will be 2-5 at the end of that. Sorry.

Final- Browns 35, Giants 14
Fantasy Heroes: Derek Anderson QB CLE 26 pts; Derrick Ward RB NYG 12 pts; Brandon Jacobs RB NYG 12 pts; Jamal Lewis RB CLE 14 pts; Browns DST 13 pts; Braylon Edwards WR CLE 23 pts; Plaxico Burress WR NYG 11 pts

NFL Week 5

(4-0) TITANS AT (2-1) RAVENS
The Setup
In my world, the story of this NFL season so far has been the swing of the football shaped pendulum back to defense. Just when you think the spread offenses have turned this blood and guts league into something less physical than an SAE vs. Sigma Chi flag football game, everything does a 180 and the teams that are having the most success are the caveman teams that bash the ball up the middle 30 times a game and play suffocating defense. Yes, the NFL sure is unpredictable. This is as opposed to say, baseball, where you know that without fail the Cubs and their fans will act like they are going to win the World Series all year, then get swept in the first round of the playoffs.

The Result
A 15 yard personal foul by Terrell Suggs on 3rd down keeps a drive alive that turns into the game winner when Kerry Collins and Bo Scaife play pitch and catch down the field in the last 5 minutes. Collins finishes the drive with a TD pass to Alge Crumpler, and the Titans remain undefeated.

FINAL- TITANS 13, RAVENS 10
Fantasy Heroes: LeRon McClain RB BAL 12 pts

Dude, You Are 5-0, Not 0-5, Get Your Head Out Your Ass

(1-3) CHIEFS AT (3-1) PANTHERS
The Setup
The Chiefs convincing win over the previously unbeaten Broncos last week resulted in the revocation of their membership in the Axis of Awful. The Lions and Rams are now the sole members of that club. They take their newfound respectability to Charlotte, where the Panthers are in a dogfight in a division that it looks like any of the 4 teams can win, the word "dogfight" being especially appropriate because this is Michael Vick's old division.

The Result
Uh oh, guess who's back in the Circle of Suck. Larry Johnson follows up his one-man wrecking crew performance against Denver with a 2 rushing yard clunker, and the Panthers throw smallpox infested blankets all over the Chiefs. 3 TD for DeAngelo Williams.

FINAL- PANTHERS 34, CHIEFS 0
Fantasy Heroes- Panthers DST 19 pts; DeAngelo Williams RB CAR 40 pts; Mushin Muhammad WR CAR 13 pts; Jake Delhomme QB CAR 20 pts

(2-2) BEARS AT (0-3) LIONS
The Setup
It's morning in America, or Detroit at least, as the dawning of the Lions Matt Millen-less era will take place this weekend. The Bears saved their season with a goal line stand against the Eagles last week, and actually find themselves tied for first place with the rapidly unraveling Packers as they enter this game.

The Result
The Yahoo recap of this game says that Kyle Orton looked like a star. I think he looks more like Dave Grohl, but whatever. A reporter pointed out to Orton that he must love playing against the Lions, due to all the success he has had against them in his career. Orton said "Yeah, I do for some reason." I'm pretty sure that reason is the Lions suck. The ouster of Millen left the Detroit fans with no reason de etre, they just kind of looked at the mess on the field, looked at each other, and sat there quietly. Very, very, quietly.

FINAL- BEARS 34, LIONS 7
Fantasy Heroes: Kyle Orton??? QB??? CHI?? 28 pts??; Bears DST 14 pts; Matt Forte RB CHI 17 pts

(2-2) FALCONS AT (2-2) PACKERS
The Setup
Last week brought us the spiritual depantsing of Aaron Rodgers. He got battered and beaten by the belligerent Buccaneer befense, I mean defense, while Packer Nation's ex-wife, Brett Favre, got a boob job and looked all hot throwing 6 TD passes and having so much childlike fun doing it. Now everyone is waiting for Aaron's world to cave in and for him to come running off the field crying like a little girl, while Brett Favre enters into his kingdom and sends all the sinners to hell. So that should be interesting.

The Result
Rodgers took a cortisone shot in his shoulder, then went out and threw for 313 yards and 3 TD. But the Packers lost their third in a row, and this one at home to the Falcons. I'm going to let you all in on a little secret. Aaron Rodgers is not the problem here. The problem is the Packers defense, which used to be good but has become horrible. Roddy White and rookie QB Matt Ryan shredded the supposedly strong Packer secondary. The run defense is even worse. It entered 29th in the league in yards allowed per carry, and after giving up 179 rushing yards at 4.9 per carry in this game, it's probably worse than that now. This Packer team is now officially in trouble.

FINAL- FALCONS 27, PACKERS 24
Fantasy Heroes- Michael Turner RB ATL 20 pts; Roddy White WR ATL 21 pts; Greg Jennings WR GB 14 pts; Donald Driver WR GB 12 pts; Aaron Rodgers QB GB 31 pts

(1-2) COLTS AT (0-3) TEXANS
The Setup
Usually when you play like you did the year you won the Super Bowl, that's a good thing. Except when you're the Colts. For them, that means playing with a complete inability to stop the other team from running the ball on you. I'm not sure how they won the Super Bowl that year in that condition, but they did, so apparently they are trying it again. It's not working out so well, as they've dropped 2 out of their last 3 and needed a furious comeback at Minnesota to avoid losing all 3. The Texans enter this game as the best team not to have won a game yet this year, so hey, that's something.

The Result
Matt Schaub apparently had a creature jump out of his abdomen and start singing "Ragtime Gal" minutes before kickoff, so Sagebrush Rosenfels got the start in his place. The Texans reeled off 27 unanswered points to grab a seemingly insurmountable 27-10 lead with a little less than 7 minutes in the game. Seemingly. Then this chain of events transpires:

- Peyton Manning takes the Colts downfield and hits someone named Tony Santi to make it 27-17 with 4 minutes left.

- Houston recovers the onside kick. Then in what has to be one of the top 5 most retarded play calls I've ever seen, Rosenfels runs a naked bootleg for about 10 yards, then gets helicoptered and fumbles after he goes into Edwin Moses mode and tries to hurdle someone instead of just sliding. Incredibly stupid play call with incredibly stupider execution. Fumble, of course, gets returned for a TD. Now it's 27-24.

- Texans get the ball back on the kickoff. On 3rd and 8, Sage rolls out of the pocket, and he's directing traffic. He's pointing, he's orchestrating, he's..fumbling..again. I see Texans cheerleaders in knee high red stripper boots in the background gasping in disbelief.

- Reggie Wayne shortly thereafter makes a pirrouhetting one handed grab in the corner of the end zone to give the Colts the lead.

- There's still a minute left though, and the Texans will get one more shot. A shot which is quickly extinguished when Sage throws what looks like some sort of flightless bird in the middle of the field where there is not even a navy blue uniform on the screen. It's picked off and the game, and Sage Rosenfels' career, is over.

FINAL- COLTS 31, TEXANS 27
Fantasy Heroes: Colts DST 14 pts; Joseph Addai RB Colts 13 pts; Reggie Wayne WR Colts 15 pts; Steve Slaton RB HOU 21 pts; Andre Johnson WR HOU 21 pts

(2-2) CHARGERS AT (1-2) DOLPHINS
The Setup
The last time we saw the Dolphins, Ronnie Brown was scoring touchdowns every other play and looking like the greatest Single Wing quarterback since Slingin' Sammy Baugh. They've had a bye week since then, and the league and the Chargers have had 2 weeks to watch game film of the 1931 Canton Bulldogs to figure out how to stop this offense.

The Result
The 1930s are so hot right now. First we enter a new Great Depression, now the Dolphins are 2-0 using an offense from that era. I predict we will soon see a great upsurge in the prominence of Dance Marathons, the American Communist Party, and people going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Meanwhile, I don't know what happened with the Chargers offense here. They entered this game 2nd in the league in yards per pass attempt, facing a defense that was 28th in that stat, and got completely shut down. Maybe it's because the Chargers defense is so bad right now that the offense couldn't get on the field. Miami held the ball over 13 minutes more than the Chargers.

FINAL- DOLPHINS 17, CHARGERS 10
Fantasy Heroes: Ronnie Brown RB MIA 20 pts; Greg Camarillo WR MIA 12 pts

(1-2) SEAHAWKS AT (3-0) GIANTS
The Setup
Watch out Giants! The Seahawks have all their wide receivers back now! The magical Bobby Engram! The scintillating Deion Branch! The bon vivant party animal Koren Robinson! They're comin to get ya! And you, you don't have your Plaxico Burress. You suspended him. You've got something called a Dominic Hixon in his place. Oh woe to you.

The Result
And the Dominic Hixon merely steps in and puts up 102 receiving yards and a TD. The Giants roll up an unconscionable 523 yards of total offense, 254 of which came on the ground. Mike Holmgren's face is now red out of embarrassment and years of obesity, instead of just years of obesity. The jig is up for the Seahawks. Not even the perpetually crappy NFC West can save them now. They may as well call up Dan McGwire and make them their QB again.

FINAL- GIANTS 44, SEAHAWKS 6
Fantasy Heroes- Domenik Hixon WR NYG 19 pts; Brandon Jacobs RB NYG 27 pts; Eli Manning QB NYG 22 pts; Sinorice Moss WR NYG 16 pts

(3-1) REDSKINS AT (2-2) EAGLES
The Setup
In many quarters, and this website's power poll is no exception, the Eagles are considered one of the best teams in the league. If they are going to keep that distinction, they're going to have to win this game, because, well, if you have a losing record after 5 games, you're really not that good. The Redskins, on the other hand, have outperformed all expectations, and a win here would give them a 2 game lead over the Eagles with a home game against them still to go.

The Result
It's official. The Eagles are officially the best team who never beats anyone. They've won exactly 1 game this year against a team who isn't the Rams. Whoopeee. They even had Brian Westbrook for this one and they still didn't win. They tried to sell us a big "Donovan McNabb Is Back and Better Than Ever" storyline at the start of this season and that has turned out to be a big load of boolsheet. I don't want to hear about the Eagles anymore. They are bad.

The Redskins don't get off easy here either, even though they won and are playing inspired football this year. Clinton Portis said after the game that
"I think the NFL was trying to throw us to the fire, to get rid of the ‘Skins out of this division.” Right, sure, because it's in the NFL's best interests to have one of their best supported franchises' season be over in October. Got it.

FINAL- REDSKINS 23, EAGLES 17
Fantasy Heroes: Clinton Portis RB WSH 23 pts; Chris Cooley TE WSH 18 pts

(3-1) BUCS AT (3-1) BRONCOS
The Setup
I haven't done the math, but I think if you add up the win/loss records this is the best matchup of the week? It's two teams with polar opposite styles. The Broncos are all offense, the Bucs are all defense. The Bucs also bring Brian Griese back to the birthplace of his career, and the place where he tripped over his dog and fell on his face on a driveway or something. You youngsters may not remember this, but back in the old days Brian Griese used to act like a drunk 15 year old girl quite a bit. Finally, if you rearrange the letters in "Bucs" it spells "Cubs", and that can't be a good thing.

The Result
Griese got knocked out of the game, and the Broncos defense played better than they have all year to grind out a win. The Bucs rendered Denver's biggest weapon, Brandon Marshall, ineffective, but Jay Cutler showed he's learnding how to deal with that, as he countered by dunking it underneath to Brandon Stokley, who is still playing football apparently, all day long.
It was a hit on the elbow on a blitz from Champ Bailey that knocked out Greise. Bailey was upset that he didn't get the sack, saying “That goes down as nothing, I don’t think. I don’t know how you put that down on the stat sheet.” I think I put that down as a "Fiery Kablammo", and you are now leading the league in them. Congrats.

FINAL- BRONCOS 16, BUCS 13

(4-0) BILLS AT (2-2) CARDINALS
The Setup
Here we've got one of the few undefeated teams in the league meeting a team who just somehow gave up 56 points to the Jets and whose quarterback had to have a come to Jesus meeting with his wife and probably Jesus to keep him from retiring after almost getting one of his receivers killed at the end of that game. It's obvious who will win this game. Right? Right???

The Result
Of course it's obvious, this is the NFL, remember, where nothing makes sense and nothing that happens one week has any correlation to what happens the next. So of course the Cardinals would win this game by three touchdowns, and the Bills would lose their starting quarterback most likely sending their season into a death spiral. Okay, maybe not a death spiral, but Jesus and Kurt Warner's wife help them if JP Losman ever has to see the field again.

FINAL- CARDINALS 41, BILLS 17
Fantasy Heroes: Kurt Warner QB AZ 23 pts; Tim Hightower RB AZ 15 pts; Larry Fitzgerald WR AZ 17 pts; Lee Evans WR BUF 18 pts

(0-4) BENGALS AT (3-1) COWBOYS
The Setup
We all know the Cowboys are the NFL version of nitroglycerin, so explosive, yet so volatile that the slightest upset to their environment can cause an explosion at the wrong time that would be considerably more destructive and messy than anyone would like. Will last week's loss to the Redskins be that sudden jolt that causes blood and entrails to fly everywhere? Possibly, but unlikely given that the Bengals are even more fucked up than they are. I mean, they are starting Cedric Benson at running back. That's really all that needs to be said.

The Result
A win for the Cowboys, but they are still very much under suspicion. They pissed away a 17 point lead at home against a team that is not known for rising to the occasion in the face of adversity, but held on to prevent a loss that would have caused fire and brimstone to rain down thru the hole in the Texas Stadium roof. TO summed up the team teetering on the brink of insanity vibe surrounding the Cowboys by stating after the game, "God used me today for his glory. Reality is where glory resides. That’s all I’ve got to say."

FINAL- COWBOYS 31, BENGALS 22
Fantasy Heroes- Tony Romo QB DAL 22 pts; Felix Jones RB DAL 15 pts; TJ Houshmandzadeh WR CIN 20 pts; Jason Witten TE DAL 13 pts; Terrell Owens WR DAL 12 pts

"You So Crazy!", "Nooo..YOU So Crazy!", "Nooo Nooo, YOU So Crazy!"

(2-1) PATRIOTS AT (2-2) 49ERS
The Setup
The last time we saw the mighty Patriots, it was 2 weeks ago, and they were getting the same treatment that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg gave Indiana Jones in this week's South Park; from the Dolphins, who were riding a 1-20 hot streak coming into that game.

The Result
The Patriots offense may be crippled by the loss of Tom Brady, their defense may be woefully deficient in many areas, but they are still the Patriots, and they won this game pretty much because they are the Patriots. That, and because they ran almost twice as many plays from scrimmage as the 49ers did. They ran the ball 43 times, which I think was more than they did all of last season, and even ran a Dolphin-esque Wildcat direct snap to Kevin Faulk for a TD. So, they may not be the Patriots we all remember, but they are 3-1. Gritty!

FINAL- PATRIOTS 30, NINERS 21
Fantasy Heroes: Kevin Faulk RB NE 17 pts; Randy Moss WR NE 19 pts; JT O'Sullivan QB SF 20 pts; Isaac Bruce WR SF 16 pts; Frank Gore RB SF 13 pts; Stephen Gostkowski K NE 15 pts

SUNDAY NIGHT
(3-1) STEELERS AT (2-2) JAGUARS
The Setup
These 2 teams played a couple of classics last year, and the Jaguars won them both even though they were both in Pittsburgh. One of them was a playoff game that looked like it was going to vault David Garrard to stardom, and the Jags to elite team status. The Jags haven't looked elite this year though. They're struggling to get their offense going, and they meet a Steeler team that has been winning with smoke and mirrors despite having no offensive line and no viable running backs.

The Result
The Jaguars can go ahead and start trying to run the ball any time now. Seriously there is not one team in the league that has suffered more from idiotic game planning than the Jaguars. Why don't they run the ball when they have 2 good running backs? Why? Contrast this with the Steelers, who ran friggin Mewelde Moore for 99 yards in this game. This is why the Steelers are 4-1, and the Jaguars are 2-3. Because the Jaguars make this game harder than it needs to be, and the Steelers just do what they do regardless of who is or isn't in the lineup. Mike Tomlin is my Coach of the Year right now. Ben Roethlisberger's balls get bigger every week too.

FINAL- STEELERS 26, JAGUARS 21
Fantasy Heroes: Ben Roethlisberger QB PIT 31 pts; Nate Washington WR PIT 15 pts; Hines Ward WR PIT 15 pts

MONDAY NIGHT

(1-3) VIKINGS AT (2-2) SAINTS
The Setup
If the Vikings lose this game and fall to 1-4, it's panic time. Well, actually, with the stock market going the way it is it should be panic time for everyone right now, but especially for them. With the Vikings picked by many to go the Super Bowl this year, a 1-4 start could mean we will soon be seeing the end of the Brad Childress/Ziggy Wilf Axis of Moustaches.

The Result
Have you ever seen a game where a team runs 2 punts back for TDs and they still lose? I know I haven't. Until this one. Reggie Bush took 2 back, but it wasn't enough to mitigate the awesome sucking power of the Saints' secondary, which got torched on 3 long pass plays to Bernard Berrian. It also wasn't enough to account for the Martin Gramatica factor, as the only guy I've ever seen play football with his wedding ring on missed a 46 yard field goal which at least may have made this an OT game, and had a field goal blocked which went back for a TD.

FINAL- VIKINGS 30, SAINTS 27
Fantasy Heroes: Saints DST 13 pts; Bernard Berrian WR MIN 19 pts; Devery Henderson WR NO 18 pts; Vikings DST 16 pts

Premiership Week 6

I've already filled you in on the huge upset that was Hull City's victory at Arsenal this past weekend. Was there anything else interesting happening in England? Fix yourself a nice place of spotted dick and find out!

(2-3-1) EVERTON 0, (4-0-2) LIVERPOOL 2
Fernando Torres' torn hamstring has not only healed, but apparently has given him magical powers. He scored twice to keep Liverpool unbeaten, and give them a win on the grounds of the other Liverpudlian club.

(4-1-1) ASTON VILLA 2, (2-3-1) SUNDERLAND 1
Sunderland jumped out to an early lead over what appeared to be a tired Villa squad (they lost a Carling Cup match earlier in the week to second division club Queens Park Rangers). Villa hung in there though, and scored on a pair of set pieces off of free kicks to grind out a home win, and vault themselves into third place in the league. A possible Champions League spot for the Villains next fall? Mmmmm?

(2-3-0) FULHAM 1, (4-2-0) WEST HAM 2
The Hammers got goals just before halftime from Carlton Cole and Matthew Etherington, and then a red card to Fulham's Andrew Johnson made the second half pretty much academic. West Ham remains perfect under their greasy new Italian coach, Gianfranco Zola. I can say that, because my mom is Full Blooded Italian. And I'm 1st generation Italian-American. You better not say that though, or else I'll put you in a meat locker.

(2-1-2) MANCHESTER UNITED 2, (1-4-1) BOLTON 0
Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his first game of the 08-09 Premiership season with a goal on a penalty kick, and Man U cruised to a home win over putrid Bolton. Bolton manager Gary Megson's official premierleague.com quote after the match was, "If the penalty had not been given (to Ronaldo) we wouldn't have had to go 4-4-2 and dur dee dur dur dee dur". Geez Megs, you want some spotted dick with that whine? Keep losing, maybe Eddie Vedder will write a song about your team like he did with the Cubs.

(2-4-0) MIDDLESBROUGH 0, (2-3-1) WEST BROM 1
In my daily internet hike yesterday, I found out that Robert Plant is from West Bromwich. Albion's stirring performance brings to mind the lyrics of one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. "Oh sweet Satan, you are the key to my lock". I listen to all my Zeppelin backwards. I do the same thing with Nickelback. Except Nickelback's subliminal messages are all about taking it in the ass.

(1-4-1) NEWCASTLE 1, (3-2-1) BLACKBURN 2
Paul Ince says he is pleased that his lads were able to spend 48 hours thinking about what Blackburn Rovers is all about instead of feeling sorry for Newcastle. That's a pretty impressive psychological weapon for Newcastle though, that they are so bad that other teams have to worry about sitting around feeling sorry for them for 2 days.

(1-4-1) STOKE CITY 0, (4-0-2) CHELSEA 2
Fullback Joe Boswinga had a goal and assist, as Stoke City blows its chance to make this a crazy bizzarro weekend by being the second newly promoted team to beat one of the big boys on the same day.

(3-3-0) PORTSMOUTH 2, (0-4-2) TOTTENHAM 0
It's been 30 years since Spurs have played anywhere but the top flight of English football. It's starting to look a lot like that's going to come to an end.

(2-2-2) WIGAN 2, (3-3-0) MANCHESTER CITY 1
A game winning penalty kick for the Egyptian Magician! (Amr Zaki). The Egyptian Magician! He has small mountain cat, that he uses to terrorize the people. In his country, that is considered magic.

TOP 5 (PTS/PLAYED/GD)
1. Chelsea 14/6/+9
2. Liverpool 14/6/+5

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP PLAY
Group A
Romania's champs, CFR Cluj, continued to acquit themselves well in the second round of group play. They battled to a scoreless draw at home against Chelsea, and are tied with the Blues for 1st place in the group. Roma went to France and drubbed Bordeaux 3-1, pretty much ending any hopes of the grape stompers of advancing out of group play.

Group B
The most surprising team in the tournament thus far comes from the island of Cyprus. Anorthosis is showing they are more than just happy to be here, as they throttled Greek side Pantathinaikos 3-1. They are now tied for the top spot in the group with Inter Milan, who couldn't hold a 1-0 lead and had to settle for a home draw against Werder Bremen.

Group C
Barcelona has put themselves in the drivers seat in this group with a thrilling 2-1 win at Ukraine's Shakhtar. Lionel Messi came off the bench to score twice in the waning minutes. Sporting Lisbon kept themselves in the mix with a 2-0 home win over Swiss champs Basel, who have 0 pts and are probably done.

Group D
You may as well put a stamp on this one and mail it to the North Pole. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are both 2-0-0 after wins this week. PSV and Olympique Marseille are toast.

Group E
Man U and Villarreal were the favorites in this group, and they seem to be well on their way to advancing. Manchester went to Denmark and drilled AaB 3-0, while Villarreal sweated one out at home over Celtic 1-0.

Group F
Probably the most wide open of all the groups right now. Bayern Munich came off the deck to salvage a 1-1 tie at home against Lyon on a header by Ze Roberto. Fiorentina missed a chance to take the lead in the group when they were unable to score and had to settle for a scoreless draw at home against Steaua Bucharest.

Group G
Arsenal's Premier League home loss to Hull City may be explained by saying they were tired after destroying Porto 4-0 in the Champions League. 2 goals each for Van Persie and Adebayor. Porto still hangs on to second place in the group, as Fenerbahce and Dynamo Kyiv ground out a 0-0 draw.

Group H
It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that Real Madrid and Juventus will advance here, but Belarus' BATE got a result to remember when they got a 2-2 draw at Juve. Real got a tiebreaking goal in the first half from Ruud Van Nistelrooy to pass a stern test at Russian champs Zenit.
