The reigning two-time NCAA Division I-AA/Subdivision Champion Appalachian State Mountaineers have defeated the #5 Michigan Wolverines, 34-32 in Ann Arbor, Michigan in a game that some are already calling the biggest upset in college football history. Appalachian State led Michigan 31-26 heading into the final quarter of play, having dominated Michigan's defense with a combination of scrambling runs by Mountaineers QB Armanti Edwards and the speedy wide out, Dexter Jackson. Michigan halfback Mike Hart put the Wolverines ahead 32-31 with a dazzling 54 yard run. However, two critical errors made by head coach Lloyd Carr prompted the Appalachian comeback. On two different TDs, Carr elected to go for the two point conversion (including Hart's fourth quarter score), and both times the conversions failed. Had the extra points been kicked instead, Michigan would have maintained a field goal lead over Appalachian State.
Following a turnover via interception, Michigan set up with a little under 2:00 minutes to go for a field goal to extend the lead. However, kicker Jason Gingell's 43-Yard attempt was blocked, leading to a quick drive led with quick strikes to T.J. Courman and CoCo Hillary, setting up a SUCCESSFUL field goal kick by App. State kicker Julian Rauch from 24-Yards out. Michigan managed to position the ball with six seconds left for a 37-Yard field goal attempt. For the second time in two minutes, however, Appalachian State blocks the kick, and completes the biggest upset in college football since the NCAA recognition of Division I and Division I-AA/Subdivision football. hey boise st. put up 56 in their first game. i think that means they shouldn't be allowed to play for the national title.

On the upshot, I did mark down Appalachian State as a game to watch out for. I don't think anyone took into account how much defense Michigan lost. In retrospect, Michigan has a talent for losing to underdogs in the Lloyd Carr era to open up the season at home. But who in their right minds could have predicted this?
And to dook!e, the chance of them playing in the National Title game are slim to none since they fell out of the top ten.
